| My people value accomplishment. The fact that I travel with my surname is a thing of great honor for me and my Gand family. I am a Kahn. Long ago my people rose from the gases of my planet, inebriated on the power of the Galactic Empire. Many of my people accepted their technology and became their hired guns. Those who did deserve nothing but the title of Gand. The Kahns remained an individual, and proudly sovereign people. I received the highest honor my people can give. I was given title, a name, as a result of completing the task of withstanding the "findsmen" and the evil Empire and being a positive force among my people. My people have challenged me to leave Gand to bring our ideals of justice and peace to other places besides our planet and to help create a universe that is independent of the reach of the Galactic Empire. | Character Description |
Gands are stocky insect-like humanoids covered in a chitinous exoskeleton and can see in the ultraviolet spectrum. They possess large, bug-like eyes and only three fingers on each hand. These digits are capable of punching through stormtrooper armor, as evidenced by Ooryl Qrygg on the planet Talasea.[1]. The subspecies that don't have lungs do not respire, as they obtain all the metabolic ingredients they need through the ingestion of their food. This makes lungless Gands immune to poisonis gasses. Natively, they speak Gand, but to speak with other beings they require the aid of a muscular gas bladder that allows them to, among other things, draw in gases and expel them at a controlled rate through pieces of their exoskeleton that vibrate to approximate speech. These Gands also make use of translator vocoders to compensate for their lack of vocal cords.
Gands needed only a fraction of the amount of sleep needed by Humans, and are able to 'store' sleep to use in times when they would not be able to get much rest.
Lungless Gands also possess remarkable regenerative abilities; Ooryl Qrygg, a Gand pilot with Rogue Squadron was able to grow a severed arm back within months, although he was assisted by a bacta cast. The exoskeleton appears more pale and chalky than normal until the regeneration process is complete.[1]
Many Gands (also bounty hunters) who left on Nar Shaddaa regularly visited Jekk'Jekk Tarr where they could find gas fumes similar to these present on their homeworld. Some of them were probably killed by Jedi Exile during her search for Quarren Visquis.
